Morton Research Forum Highlighted Students’ Achievements in Diplomacy and Research

Nearly 200 guests, faculty, staff and students gathered at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí’s John D. MacArthur Campus for the annual Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Morton Research Forum.

The event featured testimonials from students supported by the Forum and an interactive poster session where students presented their research and experiences. Eight students spoke during opening program, representing the initiatives funded by the Forum: study abroad, diplomacy and research. Most of these impressive emerging leaders were members of Florida Atlantic’s award-winning Leon Charney Diplomacy Program, representing the university at diplomacy simulation competitions, including the National Model United Nations competitions. In addition, they enhanced their diplomatic learning through study abroad programs across the globe, including Spain, Guatemala, the United Kingdom and Canada.

The poster presentations featured Morton Research Scholars, who were funded for multi-year research assignments primarily in the fields of science and health. Projects included a study on the long-term neurobehavioral impacts of prenatal oxycodone exposure, testing new compounds to combat treatment-resistant breast cancer, and understanding the neurological cues for feeling hungry. Morton Research Fellows also presented their semester-long research related to U.S. foreign policy and world affairs.

The Morton Research Forum was established in 2020 through a gift named in honor of Jeffrey S. Morton, Ph.D., the Pierrepont Comfort Chair in Political Science and Foreign Policy Association fellow. This year’s event was hosted in partnership with Florida Atlantic’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Jupiter.
